Science Park

Parc Gwyddionaeth - dyn wrth ei cyfrifiadur / Science Park - man by his computer

Company Profile

The Science Park was part-funded using European regeneration funds, and developed and promoted by the WDA with support from the local authority. The aim was to create a regional showpiece, encouraging hi-tech research and development companies to locate to the area.

Business Need

From the outset, a need was identified for a robust communications infrastructure to be in place to attract the appropriate companies. Target companies would demand fast Internet access and that advanced Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) would be required to help the individual companies realise their full potential.

eCommerce Solution

The Manager of this state-of-the-art Park acknowledged the importance of working in partnership with ICT suppliers who understood the needs of the targeted businesses and could deliver a quality service with a high level of facilitation and support.

BT and leading ICT suppliers provided a leading-edge voice and data campus network - specifically to allow fast, broadband-class connectivity for all of the Park’s residents.

By awarding the Park eLocation status, BT committed to investing heavily in the infrastructure solution and ensured that the local exchange would accommodate demand for any additional network capacity required by businesses who re-located to the Site.

New residents of the Park were provided with a complete training package of using these new technologies through ELWa’s support for work-based education and skills provision.

Business Benefits

  • The complex technical solution provided by the strategic partnership was integrated with the marketing advice and help needed to effectively attract companies from around the globe.
  • BT promoted the site to potential clients - locally, nationally and internationally - and provided on-site marketing and technical advice.
  • BT provided dual connectivity - ensuring that full 24/7 ICT provision is maintained in the event of loss of a supply cable. This is vital to companies on site that require full 24/7 technical support.
  • The state-of-the-art infrastructure enabled companies located within the Park to develop from start-up to full maturity – which should prove to be of inestimable value to the rapidly growing small business community in the area.
  • Many of the technologically-aware companies within the Park quickly became Opportunity Wales clients, benefiting from advanced solutions which included supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, and electronic marketplaces.
  • Additional facilities were created in a unique partnership with the University of Wales Bangor, which provided both recruitment services for new positions to its students, as well as conference space and visitor accommodation through its Croeso Welcome Bangor initiative.
  • The local authority’s vision to create new possibilities for local businesses and the community, as well as develop high-quality local jobs, will be secured.
