Opportunity Wales RSS Feeds

With more and more Web sites appearing everyday, keeping up to date with your favourite sites just gets harder and harder.  Wouldn't it be better if the news came to you rather than you having to visit every site in turn to see the latest additions ?

Thanks to a technology called RSS it's possible to see when a Web site has added new content without actually visiting it.  That way you can stay up to date with topics that you're interested in with minimal effort.

Not all Web sites offer RSS feeds but many do, including Opportunity Wales.  You can subscribe to our feeds below.  However, if you don't have a feed reader, you'll need to get one before you can subscribe.  There are links to various feed readers at the bottom of this page.

Opportunity Wales RSS feeds

We currently offer three feeds: one for our popular Weblog, another to alert you whenever we add new content to the site and a third which allows you to receive the latest episodes of our podcast automatically.  To subscribe to any of the feeds, simply click on the relevant icon in the table below:

What is RSS ?

Exactly what RSS stands for has become blurred with time (Really Simple Syndication, Rich Site Summary or RDF Site Summary, depending on who you talk to) but the underlying technology is the same.

An RSS feed is nothing more complicated than a structured text document that sits somewhere on a Web server. Users access it using a piece of software known as a feed reader and everytime the file is updated, the users' feed readers notifies them. Their feed reader will usually display a title, a brief paragraph describing the content and a link to it.

Getting started

To start using RSS feeds you'll need a feed reader.  These can either be installed directly on your computer or you can use a hosted service which allows you to read your feeds from any computer that has Internet access.

Locally-installed feed readers

If you want to install a feed reader on your computer we recommend a Windows application called Feed Reader: it's free, Open Source and runs on all version of Windows as far back as Windows 95.

There's a tutorial on installing and configuring it on the Opportunity Wales Web site here.

Other Windows-based feed readers include: Newz Crawler (paid), FeedDemon (paid), Awusa (free).

Mac OS X feed readers include: Newsfire (paid), Netnewswire (paid).

Hosted feed readers

Many of the popular search engines offer on-line services that allow to subscribe to and manage your RSS feeds.  Such services include: My Yahoo, MyMSN, Google Feeds, BlogLines and NewsGator.
