Implement On-line Selling via a Web Site

The concept of selling on-line from a Web site is at the centre of many Welsh SMEs thoughts on using eCommerce. Within the Opportunity Wales Web site are several articles which look at separate issues and topics, such as eCatalogues, on-line payment systems, implementing your own eCatalogue and credit card fraud and prevention. This article endeavours to bring the many facets of the on-line selling concept together, and provide SMEs with an introduction to, and explanation of, the topic.

There is no one single definitive way to describe how to set up an on-line selling capability. The issue is made more complicated by the way that products and services are packaged by individual vendors and suppliers, and also the terminology used to describe different facets of process.

The above diagram provides a simple representation of the key functions within the on-line selling concept. They are:

  • Displaying product information;

  • Enabling customers to place orders;

  • Providing a secure environment to collect payment card details;

  • Processing the payments;

  • Other considerations.
